Tarentaise cows are known for their moderate size, averaging mature weights between 1150 and 1250 lbs, and exceptional mothering capabilities. They are also known for producing fast-gaining calves that weigh approximately 50% of their dam’s weight at weaning.
The table below summarizes the weaning weights of our calves in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. It shows that during those years the average 205 day weaning weights of our heifers averaged slightly over 600 lbs, while our steers have averaged close to 650 lbs at 205 days. As a result, most of our cows are consistently weaning calves that are 50% or more of their weight. Our cows are doing this without us creep feeding our calves or using growth implants.
The photos that follow the table show examples of some of our purebred and crossbred cows and calves. At the bottom of this webpage are links to two videos that show our 2017 steers after being backgrounded around 120 days.
